The Story of Silent Night, cont.
Early the next morning, Franz Gruber sought for Joseph Mohr in his study.
When he read the poem just finished by the pastor, he cried out, "You have
found it! The perfect song! God be praised." Even as he
was reading, a lovely melody came to his mind and he composed a beautiful
but simple tune which fit the words perfectly. Joseph Mohr and Franz
Gruber sang it together while Franz played on his guitar with the long
green shoulder strap. They were delighted for now they had a new
song.
That night, the villagers winded their way through drifts of snow up to
the little church. They missed the organ but the two friends sang
their new song accompanied by the guitar. The people left that night
with a new song in their hearts and they hummed the new melody as they
went to their homes.
