Joseph Mohr arose and standing by the window in his study, he looked out into the stillness of the night. The storm had ceased and the heavens were light. Soon the sun would arise on the glorious Christmas morning. The whiteness of the snow reminded Mr. Mohr of Isaiah 1:18--"Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow."

Immediately his thoughts went to Calvary, where the great work of redemption was completed. Here was the fulfillment of God's great plan in giving His Son to the world as a GIFT. This ought to be in the song somewhere, he thought. Joseph Mohr thought anew of the death of Jesus. He seemed to feel again the intense darkness of His suffering.
But God's great plan did not end here. For out of the darkness of death came the dawn of REDEEMING GRACE that is able to transform a life and to bring it out of darkness of sin into the light of His glorious presence. Joseph's very soul seemed flooded with the truth so he wrote again another stanza of this lovely poem:
"Silent night, holy night.
Son of God, love's pure light,
Radiant beams from Thy Holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord at this birth,
Jesus, Lord at thy birth."
