The Story of
Silent Night, cont.
Pastor Mohr
returned to his Bible and continued to read on as it described the
shepherds on the hillside close by, keeping their flocks during the
night. He could see them huddled together about a glowing fire
talking in low tones, being careful, to care for all the needs of
the lambs. How wonderful the thought that these humble
shepherds of all the people in the world should be the first to hear
the announcement of the birth of God's Son and to honor them with so
important a place in the Christmas story.

Then,
trying to experience for himself the awe and fear which the
shepherds must have felt when the angel appeared in the heavens,
Joseph Mohr took his pen and began to write again:

"Silent
night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing 'Allelujah.'
Christ, the Savior is born,
Christ, the Savior is born."
