The Story of Silent Night, cont.

He read how Mary and Joseph had left their home in Nazareth to travel a long way so they could pay their taxes in Bethlehem.  His heart was overwhelmed with pity when he thought of the crowded inn and that Mary and Joseph had to sleep in a stable.  As he thought of this lowly scene of the Lord Jesus sleeping in a manger he was moved with a deep desire to transform that humble stable into a place of majesty and beauty the Christ child deserved.  Then he took up his pen and began to write.

He began:

"Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright,
Round yon virgin mother and child
Holy Infant, so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace."
