Bible Study:
How We Got Our Bible!

Our aim in these lessons is to find out how our Bible came to us.  God has preserved it for us down through the centuries.  We often take our Bible for granted.  We do not stop to think what it cost great men of God to give it to us.  These studies will help us to appreciate the value of our Bible more than ever before and to love it more and more.

Memory Verses:

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for  correction, for instruction in righteousness: that
the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."
II Timothy 3:16, 17

Theme Songs:

My Bible and I

"I have a wonderful treasure,
The gift of God without measure
And so we travel together,
My Bible and I."

Holy Bible, Book Divine

Holy Bible, Book Divine,
Precious treasure, thou art mine.
Mine to tell me whence I came;
Mine to teach me what I am.

Mine to chide me when I rove,
Mine to show a Savior's love.
Mine thou art; to guide and guard;
Mine to punish or reward.

Poem

The Anvil of God's Word

Last eve I paused beside a blacksmith's door,
And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime,
Then looking up, I saw upon the floor
Old hammers, worn with beating years of time.

"How many anvils have you had," said I,
"To wear and batter all those hammers so?"
"Just one," said he, and then with twinkling eye,
"The anvil wears the hammers out, you know."

And so, thought I, the Anvil of God's Word
For ages skeptics blows have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed--the hammers gone.

I.  The Purpose of God's Word

"Man does not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceeds out of the mouth of God."

Matthew 4:4

God reveals to us in the Bible all that we need to know.
We would know very little about God if we did not have the Bible.
He reveals Himself to us in the things He has made, such as the
flowers, trees, mountains, sun, moon, and stars, birds, and animals.

But that is not enough.  These things could never tell us that we are sinners and how we can be saved.  We need the Bible.  It tells us who God is, what He does and what He wants us to do.  He has unveiled Himself to us in the Bible.  He has taken the veil off of many questions and helped us to understand the answers.

In the Bible we find how the world came into being, how sin entered the world, how man became a sinner, how God loves man, how Christ came to die for us, how we may be saved, how the Lord Jesus is coming again, how God is going to bring joy to this world at last and how we are going to be in Heaven with Him forever.

There are many other things that are to be found in this wonderful Book, but it is enough to say that all that God thinks it necessary for man to know about Himself and about God is in the Bible.

The Bible is God's Book and can only be understood by those who have been born again. (John 3:3)  We can only understand this Book be the Spirit of God.

II.  The Presentation of God's Word

"God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spoke in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son."  Hebrews 1:1,2

God spoke to men in various ways before the Bible was completed.  Before there were any Bibles, God let men know about Himself and what He wanted of man, who was a sinner.

Let us look at some of these ways:

A.  By Angels
  Genesis 22:11; Luke 1:28

B.  By Dreams
Genesis 37:5; Genesis 41:25

C.  In Nature
Psalm 97:6; Romans 1:20

D.  Directly
Genesis 3:9; Genesis 4:9; Exodus 3:4

E.  Through Prophets

1.  Moses Exodus 3:15, 16
2.  Isaiah  Isaiah 1:1,2, 18-20
3.  Daniel  Daniel 2:26-30

F.  By the Living Word, His Son

God spoke to men through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.  God did not come into the world as He is, a Spirit, but He came to show men what He is like in the person of His Son.  Jesus said, "He that hath seen Me, hath seen the Father."  Jesus said several times that He came to speak for His Father and not for Himself.

God has to show Himself to us in the form of a man because we are men, human beings.  Jesus had to have a body like ours to make us understand what God is like.  We could not understand a Spirit; for we have a body which is far different.  Here are some of the things the Bible says about Jesus coming into the world:

John 12:49

John 14:10

Jesus is the LIVING WORD of God. John 1:14

G.  By the Written Word

God had to speak to men in various ways until the Bible was completed.  It isn't necessary now for God to spend a special angel or prophet with another message. (Galatians 1:8, 9)  The Bible is here for us to read.  Everything we need is included in its pages.

Find the following verses in your Bible and write the names of two groups of people who were told by God all that He wanted them to know:
